TIGÉ BOATS GOLD COAST POKER RUN A HIT

Typically beautiful Gold Coast spring weather with a forecast high of 25 degrees greeted participants at the start of the 2008 Tigé Boats Gold Coast Poker Run in the Broadwater off Southport on Sunday.

After collecting a set of quiz questions from the Volunteer Coast Guard patrol boat, participants headed for their first Card Stop off Paradise Point. Following a course which led inland to Sanctuary Cove and back out to the Broadwater they continued to answer quiz questions until reaching Card Stop 2 off Tulleen Island. Here they collected their second card and quiz sheet before heading inland again, this time past Jacobs Well to the lunch stop at Meridien Marina’s Horizon Shores. At this point they collected their third card and handed in their first two completed quiz sheets before relaxing over lunch in the sun at the Anchorage Café.

Collecting their third quiz sheet from the Volunteer Coast Guard Patrol Boat off Cabbage Tree Point, participants headed for Whalleys Gutter and the Broadwater to find Card Stop 4. Continuing to answer questions they headed down Tipplers passage and on past Couran until they located their last check point off the Sovereign Islands. From here it was a relatively short leg to the finish at the Spit boat ramp at Muriel Henchman Drive.

The fun of the event did not stop at prize giving with many enjoying the hospitality at Saks Restaurant and Bar on the water at Marina Mirage for some considerable time afterwards. The presence of the two of the iconic Surfers Paradise Meter Maids ensured that this was another glamorous Gold Coast affair.

The holder of the best hand and winner of the 2008 Tigé Boats Gold Coast Poker Run with a pair of Threes and a pair of Sevens in “Frog Licker”, a 330 Hp Lt1 Chevrolet powered Custom Alloy 6 metre Jet Boat, was Brad Marsden. His prize consisted of the 2008 Tigé Boats Gold Coast Poker Run Trophy, a 2008 Tigé Boats Gold Coast Poker Run Framed Award Poster and a 32” / 81cm Integrated Digital Plasma Television.

Second, with a pair of Aces was Mark Gollé in a blue and white 340Hp 2008 Tigé 22VE, taking home a 2008 Tigé Boats Gold Coast Poker Run Framed Award Poster and a 21” / 51cm Television. Third in a 6 metre 2005 Four Winns Horizon powered by a 320Hp Mercruiser, was Steven Prideaux, with a pair of Kings. Steven won a 2008 Tigé Boats Gold Coast Poker Run framed award poster and HP All-in-one Printer, Scanner, Copier.

Competition in the quiz was very close, with just 5 points separating the top four places. The winner, by one point, was Laurie Wadman in his 340Hp blue and white 2008 Tigé 22VE. Laurie took home a 21” / 51cm television, a great result, as it was his birthday. Winner of the HP All-in-one Printer, Scanner, Copier, in second place was Mark Golle. Brad Marsden, in third place, won an i-Pod. In fourth place and riding a Sea Doo (the only PWC in the Tigé Boats Gold Coast Poker Run) were Early Bird Entry Leigh and Carla Trevaskis, who won a Australia Volunteer Coast Guard Association associate membership marine assist package.

Considerable interest was generated by the number of Tigé Boats entered including the stunning newly released 2009 Tigé 22Ve showcasing the new Tigé sixty five function L.C.D. screen electronic dash and fitted with the Alpha Z tower and a P.C.M. 343Hp inboard engine.

Those at the prize giving were unanimous in their enjoyment of and continued support for this fun family event. Stuart Roberts, the event’s director, confirmed that planning will start shortly to ensure that this event, which will take place next year on Sunday 20 September 2009, is one not to be missed.

Australian Volunteer Coastguard Flotilla Southport has received a boost in their fund from a number of Australia Volunteer Coast Guard Association associate membership marine assist packages sold to participants at the event briefing and a donation from the organisers. One of the contestants who signed up with the coastguard on Saturday night was towed home from Whalley’s Gutter on Sunday after a cooling system failure. He commented that his Coastguard subscription was the best $50 he had spent in a long time.
